CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

For the Maini Group, corporate social responsibilities have been integral to our DNA since the beginning. We take inspiration from the Bhagavad Gita: “Karma parma dharma” which in its most inclusive sense means “Work is righteous living”.

Our factories are green, incorporating solar energy and recycling as appropriate, but it goes beyond ensuring all group companies use environment-friendly processes to manufacture environment-friendly products. CSR encompasses larger responsibilities to environment, consumers, employees, other stakeholders and the world at large, always considering how our activities impact them and proactively fostering community growth and development.

Externally, our CSR focuses on three prime areas,

EDUCATION

The thrust is to help children learn and thereby enable a better quality of life. Apart from awarding scholarships, the Group’s larger efforts focus on establishing – building, furnishing and staffing – and running schools in target villages around Bangalore.

ENVIRONMENT

Environmental initiatives such as these listed below also aim to teach, learn and share knowledge with children and community:

Public park clean-up campaigns in Bangalore

The Annual Prestige Environment Seminar held in association with Loughborough University, UK since 2006
Consumer product development such as the electricity-generating Maini E-Cycle for rural use

RURAL UPLIFTMENT

This is the objective of the Gramothan Foundation, an NGO started and guided by our Founder. The Foundation works to improve the quality of life of tribal and rural India where 84% of the population, about 600 million, lives below the poverty line.

The major emphasis is to make the villagers self-sufficient through active involvement in

Increasing land productivity by better farming methods
Time management.
Acquisition of new skills and knowledge: such as in recycling for building construction
Health care schemes

Work at present focuses on pilot projects in the villages of a particular taluk in Karnataka which are scalable and can therefore be easily replicated elsewhere in India.

All these initiatives are directed by our Founder Dr SK Maini, mainly through the Gramothan Foundation, the NGO he incorporated in 2009. Inspired by the life and teachings of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya 1861-1946, the visionary freedom fighter and educationist, Dr. Maini's sustained commitment to making a difference continues to extend the Group's CSR agenda.

VALUE SYSTEMS

As a Group committed to rapid and responsible growth, we constantly introduce new policies and processes: industrial, and social, environmental – and ethical. A shared system of values among all stakeholders does much to ensure each new initiative’s sustainability.

At the Maini Group, therefore, corporate social responsibility is inclusive and a sustained process of learning, doing and sharing.
